“The Romance of the Rose”
Beside the spring a while I stayed,
Admiring how the crystals made
Mirrors for all the lovely things
That filled the garden. Memory brings
The tought that I too long had let
Its charm bemuse me, vain regret!
I feel that magic glass deceived
My soul, but had I then perceived
What sorrow to its sight was wed,
I would have whirled about and fled
As man pursued by plague will flee.
And yet misfortune captured me.
From all things mirrored there I chose
A rose bush, charged with many a rose,
Surrounded by a thick grown hedge,
And doubt not I held in pledge
Paris and Pavia faithfully,
My heart would surely then agree
To render up the two, so I
Might gaze on it unceasingly”
Guillaume de Lorris (ca. 1225)
